Damage to Harbour infrastructure

Guernsey Harbours is now assessing the damage caused to vital infrastructure following last Friday's storm (9th November 2018).

The Havelet slipway bore the brunt of the winds and very strong tidal currents, with the structure suffering considerable damage. As a result, the slipway is now closed to the public and port users for the foreseeable future.

Repair options and assessments are now being carried out with States Property Services.

Guernsey's Harbourmaster Captain David Barker said:

"This was a short sharp storm, with gusts up to Force 10. Even though our harbours provide excellent protection from the weather, it still managed to damage some of our mooring pontoons and the slipway at Havelet Bay. We will make repairs as soon as possible but this is a timely reminder to keep an eye on the forecast and take precautions, particularly if you are a boat owner - it certainly won't be the last storm of the winter."

Permanent barriers at the Havelet slipway will be put up shortly, as the area is in a dangerous condition for public use.

One of the swan pool pontoons was also damaged beyond repair due to the bad weather conditions on Friday, and a recovery operation to get the structure out of the water will get underway shortly.

It is also recommended mariners and port users should ensure they keep up to date with the Local Notices to Mariners warnings via our website.
