DID YOU KNOW that 311 UK lifeboat launches were sent out in 2015 for incidents involving kayaking and canoeing.
Guernsey Harbours and Guernsey CoastGuard want to help support safer enjoyment of the sport by raising awareness of safer behaviours. We also want to make it easier for paddlers to get safety information.
Of 16 analysed fatalities from 2010 to 2013, none were able to call for help themselves. In most cases of capsizing, the casualty could not get back in and they remained in the water for over an hour. Most are reliant on someone else raising the alarm.
How to stay safe:
- Always carry a means of calling for help and keep it within reach. If it can't be reached in an emergency, it's no help.
- Wear a personal flotation device.
- Check the weather and tides.
- Tell someone else where you are going and when you'll be back.
- Wear appropriate clothing for the conditions and your trip.
- Get some training: contact a local canoe club and look for coaching sessions.
